I THOUGHT THAT YOU ONLY HAD TO TAKE THE PLACEMENT TEST IF YOU'RE MAJORING IN THE FIELD IT SAYS ON THE PAGE. WHAT??/ Since we have to take math courses as part of the general ed requirements for CAS, doesn't that mean that EVERYONE has to take it then???? WHATTT?!! -a totally confused incoming freshman

It says on the website that it’s only recommended for certain majors, but I was at an Orientation Advisory meeting today and the word is on the street that if there’s even a chance you might need it, you should.

Basically, if you ever plan on taking pre-calc, business math, or any of the calculuses, you need it. If you’re just going for a B.A. or something and were planning on only taking a math like problem solving, you won’t need it.

But a lot of people end up taking classes that have some sort of math as a pre-req, and you’d need ALEKS to get into that. Especially if you end up changing your major or something.

Also, apparently the list of majors has changed. My brother is coming in as an Econ major, and it wasn’t on there before but I told him to check again and it was added.

Casual reminder that if you are a freshman/transfer student coming to UConn, you probably need to take the ALEKS math placement test soon- you need to finish it 12 business days before you come to campus.

Go here to do it.

(It’s only strictly recommended for certain majors but you will need it if you ever plan to take a math course at UConn and it will start costing money after this summer so if you’re not sure its probably best to just take it)

A lot of people do. There are always some people who have a lot of points left over at the end of the semester, but if you like being able to grab a coffee on the way to class or between classes, or being able to grab food and run rather than eat it in the dining hall, i’d go with the Ultimate.

Of course, you can always start with the basic and see how many points you use at first. You can upgrade to the bigger plan at any point during the semester (but just know the points don’t roll over)

I had the basic plan my freshman year and used up my points pretty quickly once i figured out how to use them, then my sophomore year i had the ultimate and I ended up using basically all of my points, but I ate in the U at least a couple times a week since I had classes in the middle of campus and didn’t feel like walking all the way to a dining hall for lunch.

If you can afford it, go with the ultimate. You get 500$ points (vs 200) to spend at the U and the cafes, for only like $100 more in cost.

You might be able to squeeze a futon in with an unlofted bed if youre clever about some other stuff, but you can easily fit it with a lofted bed (which is totally allowed)

The beds are loftable, but unless you have a corner room, its not really feasible to have a futon.

I definitely don’t think there’s room to have one with a non-lofted bed (and I’m not sure you’re allowed to loft the beds?) Between the closet, bed, and desk you don’t have a whole lot of extra space.

So I am about to submit my housing application as an incoming freshman. I have no idea how housing works? I want to be a part of an LC, but I really want to live in Northwest! I am a science major and where most of the LC's are (Alumni) are way too far from the science buildings! I am in love with Northwest. But my question is, do we also have pick-times like the sophomore, juniors? I just wanna know what my chance of getting into Northwest is? And if I am able to even pick?

As a freshman, you don’t get to pick where you live unless you specify a preference for a LC. So you could end up in Northwest, but it’s really sort of just random where you’ll end up.

They can, but they may not be able to have them in on-campus lots (and it will cost $$). UConn offers parking to people with 54+ credits first, then other students later in the summer or fall if all the spots aren’t filled.

But there are other places you can pay to park your car, like the Oaks on the Square garage or Farmer Brown parking, or some churches on campus sell spots as well.

Oozeball is really really awesome! It’s a one day, single-elimination mud volleyball tournament. UConn brings in a ton of mud and sets up like 10 courts that are 6 inches deep and the games go all day. Typically we get like 300 6-8 person co-ed teams playing. It’s a really great time. You get really messy and the mud can kinda level the playing field and make for some really interesting matchups. If you come here I’d definitely recommend playing! I consider it one of the things you should not graduate UConn without doing at least once.

Helpful tips: Don’t drive anywhere if you can avoid it. Especially be careful on the 84 off/on ramp.

Carry your UConn ID everywhere. Technically they can’t get you in trouble for not having it, but it makes things a lot easier.

And for the love of god don’t do anything too stupid. I shouldn’t even have to say it but DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.

Pros - friends, warm september days, bacon days at the dining hall, working with cool people, learning (some) things, nickel nights, free shirts, free cups, free everything, petting jonathan, getting into places you’re not supposed to be in at night, late night delivery, oozeball, a million free condoms. etc

Cons - exams, heartbreak, shitty classes, windy days, ridiculous textbook prices, missing the bus, cumulative finals, fee bills, tuition hikes, no parking spots, the stupid library, ignorant assholes, no washing machines available, etc.

Do most people do random roommates? And from your experience did people as freshman find roommates at orientation?? Thanks!

I think most people do go with a random roommate, but there’s always a couple of people who room with friends from high school or people they met at orientation or through facebook.

I’ve known a couple people who decided to be roommates at orientation and they all had varying degrees of success.

The answer is no. They give you a deadline of a few days to decide if you want to take the option they give you, if you dont respond or say no, you stay where you are. No harm, no foul.

Anon asking about room changes- earlier in the semester I had a girl message me who had applied for a room change and been assigned to fill the space in my room. She never ended up moving out of her original room even though she had applied and been reassigned, so I don’t think there’s any obligation to do so.

Hi! So I'll be an incoming freshman in the fall and was wondering which LC to choose. I can't decide between Leadership and Global so, in your opinion, which is the better overall? Also, Leadership LC is in Eddie while Global House is in McMahon, which is a better living environment? Thank you!

I can’t tell you which one to pick, it really depends on your own interests and needs, so I would suggest trying to get in touch with people from those LC’s if you want information about them.

That being said, I know a lot of kids from Leadership Learning Community and they’re all top notch kids at UConn, winning awards and doing really great work. So if you’re prepared to dive in and get involved and be a leader on a large scale, and excellence and standing out is what you want to get out of college, Leadership is what I’d go with.

in response to the question about orientation and classes, I was in the first orientation group last year, but I didnt end up staying in any of the classes they put me in. I switched everything after the end of all of the orientations (in July) and ended up with a great schedule with no Friday classes. as a freshman you're taking mostly gen-eds anyway, so don't worry about your late pick time. there will always be some option open!

That’s true to some extent. Some people might not feel comfortable changing their schedule after orientation because they want to make sure their classes fit their plan of study. Also people in the sciences who need to take biology, chemistry, and physics their freshman year won’t have the same flexibility other majors have.

I was orientation session ten and ended up with all the classes I needed but my schedule wasn’t the prettiest. It just depends.

For freshman registering for later orientation sessions, will most of the classes be filled up? Will there be less of a selection to choose from?

Yes, there will definitely be fewer classes to choose from. It’s always best to attend the earlier orientation sessions if at all possible.

If you have to attend the later ones, you’ll still get classes, but you schedule might not be the most convenient or anything and you might not be able to get all the classes you want.
